SC Ports Authority (SCPA) owns and operates public seaport and intermodal facilities in Charleston, Greer, Dillon, and Georgetown. Our 900+ employees handle cargo, operate and maintain cargo handling equipment, manage port facilities and operations, and support the port system in a fast-paced 24/7 environment.

Job Summary

The assignment is scheduled for May 22, 2023 - July 28, 2023. The SCPA Engineering and Facilities is seeking a college or rising college student who is studying Geographic Information Systems and currently enrolled in an affiliated discipline such as Geography, Computer Science, Planning, Coastal/Environmental/Marine Science, etc.

Candidates shall be attending or are enrolled to attend an accredited college or university. Requires strong writing skills, good communication and documentation skills, and organizational and time management ability. Candidate must have the ability to operate a personal computer and mobile device. Must deal effectively with the public, staff, and varying levels of management.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Assignments include projects to cultivate technical, writing, communication, and team-building skills. The diversity of projects creates a variety of opportunities for the intern to gain exposure to working for a major economic driver for the State of South Carolina. The specific assignments would be primarily located at SCPA Headquarters assisting the SCPA GIS Manager and Engineering Team with tasks related to geospatial data collection, cartographic design, GIS presentation, and other associated operations and activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma and currently pursuing a bachelor's degree with upperclassman status.
  • A valid South Carolina driver's license is required to operate a Ports Authority-owned licensed motor vehicle.

The selected intern should have the following general capabilities:

  • Strong familiarity with the ArcGIS suite of programs, particularly ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS
  • Pro, and ArcGIS Online
  • Knowledge of database administration concepts and procedures
  • Knowledge of cartographic design principles

Familiarity with geospatial collection app technology such as Collector, Field Maps,

  • Workforce, or Survey123
  • Familiarity with metadata standards and procedures
  • General understanding of geographic web products such as dashboards, story maps, etc.
  • General understanding of geographic coding and scripting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
