Crane Mechanic Job description

As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an (Port Crane Technician 1, Port Crane Technician 2, Port Crane Technician 3, or Port Crane Technician 4) depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).

Salary ranges are listed below for the various positions.

Starting salary depends upon qualifications:

WS-215 / Special Entrance Rate $22.66

WS-216 / Special Entrance Rate $24.25

WS-218 / Special Entrance Rate $26.79

WS-219 / Special Entrance Rate $31.97

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One year of general experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and/or electronic systems in either a commercial or industrial setting; or one year of general experience in the maintenance or repair of computer-driven heavy equipment.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in a vocational-technical school (trade school) or military school in the installation, maintenance or repair of hydraulic systems, mechanical systems, electrical systems, electronic systems, and/or computer-driven heavy equipment will substitute for general experience on a month-for-month basis.

NOTE:

Computer-driven heavy equipment can include but is not limited to, industrial cargo handling equipment, various types of cranes, conveyors, combines, dredges, movable bridges, gangways, subways, elevators, airplanes, etc.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

New employees must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC). When hired, employees who do not already possess a TWIC must immediately apply. Failure to obtain the required card may be grounds for termination.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To train in the maintenance, testing, and repair of computer-driven cranes used for loading and/or unloading ships.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Entry.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Direct from a Port Crane Supervisor; functional from higher-level Port Crane Technicians as needed. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

LOCATION OF WORK:

May be used by all Ports; other locations may be approved by SCS.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Port Crane Technician 2 by the absence of experienced-level responsibility for troubleshooting and maintenance tasks of computer-driven port cranes.

Examples of Work

EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Assists in the maintenance, repair, or replacement of industrial-size electric motors, wire rope reeving systems, gear reducers, and hydraulic systems using maintenance manuals, schematics and diagrams. 

Assists with miscellaneous metal repairs, surface preparation for painting, brush and spray painting, and high-pressure cleaning.

Lubricates bearings, pins, gear works and other critical components of cranes.

Assists in the maintenance or replacement of lighting ballasts, bulbs and fixtures. 

Assists in the installation and repair of nonmetallic cables, thin walls or rigid conduit.

May assist higher level technicians in the troubleshooting of Programmable Logic Controllers and Variable Frequency Drives such as ABB 800, Compact Control Builder, Seimens Step 7, Allen Bradley, RS-Logix, Cutler-Hammer GH-95, General Electric DC 2000, and Logicmaster 90/70.
