Crane Operator Job description

The Port of New Orleans (PORTNOLA) is a diverse deepwater port uniquely located on the Mississippi River near the Gulf of Mexico. PORTNOLA is seeking a Pile Driver who can complete daily tasks on a marine crane barge. The primary role of a Pile Driver is to safely and efficiently perform various physical duties as a ground man on the installation of all piles, including placing, aligning and leveling piles on marine construction projects.

Pile Drivers are responsible for tender maintenance and repair and will use pneumatic air tools daily. The position currently consists of working a forty (40) hour work week (Monday – Thursday) with overtime as necessary. Work will is both land and water-based in nature.

A VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE IS REQUIRED

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

One year of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, or maintenance or operation of land-based or marine-based construction or maintenance equipment. 

Job Concepts

The function of Work:

To hoist, set, design, and assist in the driving of steel and wooden piles, erecting struts, and braces, and making other wharf and bridge repairs.

Level of Work:

Experienced.

Supervision Received:

General supervision is received from a Piledriver Foreman.

Supervision Exercised:

None.

Location of Work:

All agencies.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from other laborer jobs by the presence of duties involving piledriving work.

Differs from Piledriver Foreman by the absence of supervisory duties.

Examples of Work

Rigs piles, directs them into leads after they are picked up, and spots piling where it is to be driven by giving necessary signals.

Removes and replaces caps, braces, wall plugs, shaling, sills, fenders, dolphins, and other wharf and bridge members.

Uses hand and power saws and foot adzes to cut and trim bridge and wharf members.

Bolts new frame members into places using power and hand tools for boring and drilling.

Ties re-enforcing steel.

Erects, checks, and works from scaffolding.

Uses cant hooks, jacks and blocks, and tackle to move and arrange timbers.

Directs and trains assigned helpers and apprentices.
