Maritime Pilot Job description

The job holder is responsible to provide guidance to ship masters in achieving safe and timely navigation of vessels within AD Ports limits. To represent the Port Authority when onboard the vessel

Objectives and Role Profile

1-Marine Sr. Pilot Obligations

•        Acting with loyalty, honesty, and good faith to the Authority

•        including, but not limited to:

•        The duty to exercise reasonable care and diligence.

•        The duty not to make improper use of information;

•        The duty not to make improper use of their position.

•        Act appropriately as a Marine Sr. Pilot, including but not limited to using Authority resources efficiently and effectively:

•        Treating colleagues with courtesy, consideration, and sensitivity;

•        Treat other port users and members of the public with courtesy and in a professional manner;

•        Being customer-focused;

•        Comply with any AD Ports policies and procedures as amended from time to time.

•        Any work as reasonably directed by the Line manager as required provided it is safe to do so and is within the level of the Marine Sr. Pilot's skill, competence and training undertaken;

•        Obtaining permission through the system from the Line manager before undertaking paid employment outside of that provided by the ADPorts. Refusals to grant permission will generally be for reasons of a 'conflict of interest or Occupational Safety and Health considerations.

2-Pilotage, Navigation, and Berthing

•        Provision of efficient and competent pilotage services by the Port shipping requirements.

•        Assist with the coordination of all arrangements for vessels arriving, anchoring, berthing, unberthing, shifting ship, and departing.

•        Completion of relevant pilotage documentation and accurate provision of information for charging.

•        Liaise with the pilot boat crew, tug boats, linesmen, and lines boat and coordinate towage requirements.

Maintain Maximum utilization of marine Pilotsconsidering fatigue and other elements that might harm the port safety.

Key Tasks and Performance Indicators

3-Port Operations & Vessel Management

•        Ensure all Port berthing and navigational are compliant in line with relevant marine regulations.

•        Provision of advice and expertise in marine-related matters including planning, construction, and maintenance of navigational aids and marine structures.

•        As required, assist with monitoring hydrographic surveys of the Port.

•        Operate port control radio station as a licensed operator.

4-Internal Communication & Relationships

•        Positive contributions at meetings to assist with Port trade development and expansion planning.

•        Liaise with Port personnel.

•        Maintain positive relations with the senior Port management personnel.

•        Interface with relevant Port personnel during pilotage movements.

•        Advise and assist Port Management with operational, technical, and environmental matters.

•        Assist line manager on leaves and duty roster activities.

5. External Communications & Relationships

•        Assist with the promotion of the Port and its services.

•        As required, attend and represent the Port at meetings and conferences.

•        Liaise with ship’s agents and Port Users regarding arrival and departure arrangements and tides, drafts, weather, sea state, and channel limitations of the port. As required and under the instruction of the Line manager.

6. Health, Safety & Environment

•        Adheres to Safe working instructions and SOPs.

•        Adheres to near misses and incident reporting.

•        Assist to set the Department Risk assessment. 

7. Training & Development

•        Conduct in-house training on marine-related matters as required.

Challenges:

  • In accordance with the individual’s knowledge and experience, provide assistance and advice for operational, technical andHSE/emergency response matters affecting the Port. Be available on call whilst in the Abu Dhabi area, whether on duty or not, for any emergency involving the Port

Qualifications/Experience/Competencies

  • Comprehensive knowledge of shipping, navigation, and port operations.
  • Masters Foreign Going certificate Class I (unlimited).
  • Demonstrates competence and effective application of ship handling and pilotage skills.

Actively seeks to keep informed regarding matters which may affect the day-to-day scheduling and methods of pilotage.
