Dock worker Job description

At ABP, we are recruiting for a Marine Supervisor (Berthing Master) to join the team based at the Port of Immingham.

As a Marine Supervisor, you will plan, advise, control, and record the safe berthing of vessels within the lock, dock and associated river jetties, ensuring safe and controlled supervision of the mooring team.

We are looking for someone who is a great leader - you'll lead a team of 6, eager to work hard and get stuck into this exciting and fast-paced industry.

The role follows a four on/four off (2 days, 2 nights) shift pattern. For this, we offer a competitive basic salary plus contributory pension from day one, private medical insurance, access to our Employee Assistance Program, 26 days annual leave, a wide range of discounts with high street and online retailers! We offer an inclusive work environment and an in-house academy which offers ongoing training opportunities!

What you'll be doing

  • Plan vessel's berth positions regarding size and other vessel locations taking into consideration stevedoring requirements - in conjunction with the Duty Assistant Dock Master (ADM) and Assistant Operation Managers (AOM).
  • Rig necessary fenders as required, for the dock, and vessel-to-vessel berthing.
  • Carry out toolbox talks and team safety briefings and write up reports of any accidents, incidents, or damage.
  • Advise the provision of fresh water to vessels requesting it and ensure records are kept of water supplied.
  • Be involved in the maintenance of the Marine Departments Resources (Boat, watering equipment, radios and fenders, port safety equipment, etc), including maintenance of lockside, bollards, and removal of debris from dock water.
  • In the event of any pollution incidents within the dock, assist with the initial assessment of the spill, carry out an investigation and coordinate clean-up operations.
  • Responsible for the ongoing supervising, development, and training of team members. Actively assist in the training of new entrants into the development.

What we're looking for

  • A sea-going watch-keeping certificate or a completed ABP Marine Berthing Master Training book.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills to be able to influence others while maintaining efficient lines of communication.
  • Sound knowledge of Port and Marine procedures.
  • Pro-active approach to Health & Safety and the port environment.
  • Willing to be flexible to assist with rapidly changing work requirements. Additionally, traveling to other Humber ports as the need arises.
  • Knowledge of bylaws and other relevant legislation.
  • Able to make decisions and solve problems under pressure.
  • Full UK driving license.
