Crane Operator Job description
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
- Operate container, gantry, and mobile cranes, with associated support equipment, e.g. buckets, hoppers, and rigging gear.
- Assist with mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance on crane equipment when needed.
- Clean crane department tools, equipment, and work area.
- Follow all safety rules and procedures to ensure cargo is handled in a safe manner.
- Complete work orders and document work completed.
- Assist other departments and operate the equipment as needed, e.g. forklifts, and yard trucks in support of operations.
- All other duties as assigned by management.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Must tolerate and work at heights of more than 250 feet.
- Must be able to respond easily to verbal and written instructions.
- Background in diesel-mechanical operation is a plus.
- Prior crane operation and crane rigging experience preferred.
- Must be able to operate all cranes at an acceptable level for vessel operations within 6 months.
- The position requires shift work, overtime, and a variable work schedule, including weekends and holidays.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and meet TWIC security requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Frequent exposure to inclement weather, loud noises from machinery, and machinery in operation. Individuals must have a good sense of balance and coordination to climb steep ladders and move about freely on crane equipment. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time during crane operations. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and work 12 to 16-hour shifts. Ability to safely access all areas and parts of large heavy equipment by means of vertical long-run ladders, confined spaces, and waterside structures required. Must be able to use all PPE equipment effectively. In-state travel is required. Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination.
