Container Operations Job description
Under the supervision of the Director of Container Operations or General Manager, the Container Yard Manager directly supervises, plans, organizes, coordinates, and evaluates all Container Operations service departments and employees. Upholds the values of the GPA to promote Safety, Integrity, Respect, Community, Creativity, and Opportunity. Promotes a safe work environment by participating in safety initiatives and reporting unsafe conditions and behaviors.
JOB DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
1. Ensures that all daily Yard, Vessel, Gate, Control Center, and CES Warehouse, and Intermodal operations run safely, efficiently, and within the parameters of the Operating Budget.
2. Coordinates with the Georgia Ports Authority Maintenance Department to ensure availability of yard equipment for service production demands as well as for preventive maintenance scheduling.
3. Oversees scheduling and work assignments of all department employees.
4. Ensures proper training of all employees required to operate container handling equipment and the GPA computer system.
5. Coordinates with external customers to ensure the Yard (Marine Terminal, CES Warehouse, and/or Intermodal Container Transfer Facility) is organized in an efficient and safe manner.
6. Works closely with Trade Development and Vessel Operations to plan the yard for new business opportunities. Plans future operating improvements.
7. Oversees the evaluation and communication activities of department employees.
8. Reports Yard activities and production levels as required. Ensures all Yard operations are in compliance with new technology (ATAMS) requirements.
9. Prepares and manages the department operating and capital budgets. Ensures budgetary compliance and reports variances.
10. Assists in the establishment of department goals and implements procedures to accomplish the same.
11. Communicates regularly with employees and external customers to provide service and business-related information.
12. Ensures all employees perform their duties with the utmost concern for their safety, their equipment's upkeep, and the safety and well-being of those working on the Port.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of GPA computer systems and Yard operations is desired. The ability to analyze problems and take initiative to resolve issues or problems is desired. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively and professionally with the GPA staff on all levels as well as members of the shipping industry and the general public. Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills are required.
Education and/or Experience:
Four-year college degree in business, transportation, or related field required. Five years of related work experience desired. Prior management experience desired.
Other Requirements:
Must meet the criteria for and obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Valid state driver's license required.
