Cargo Warehouse Agent Job description

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

  • Responsible for ensuring that customer orders are executed correctly
  • Coordinate and schedule cargo handling operations
  • Provide leadership in building a team-based, goal-oriented workforce
  • Track and provide specific metrics set forth by management
  • Assign personnel to a team structure based on the daily workload
  • Prioritize and schedule daily work assignments for cargo teams during operation
  • Direct equipment operators to ensure that cargo is loaded/unloaded properly from trucks and railcars in a safe and efficient manner
  • Oversee discharge monitors for cargo moving on or off the port facility via ship/barge to verify counts, prepare discharge reports, document damaged goods, secure proper storage location, and ensure that port safety procedures are followed
  • Record daily activities on work order time sheets for cost accounting purposes
  • Evaluate cost accounting reports received via e-mail and review costs associated with specific jobs
  • Verify the accuracy of cost data system time sheets and manual work orders
  • Administer equitable overtime distribution for cargo personnel and approve payroll time sheets in an accurate and timely manner
  • Responsible for completing vessel operations including pre-arrival work, assigning discharge locations for inbound or outbound cargoes, cargo backhauls, house checking labor needs, and appropriate documentation
  • Oversee recouping activities, relocation of cargo, or other special work assignments and accurately record these activities on appropriate forms as required
  • Perform physical inventories and investigate discrepancies as required
  • Participate in pre-arrival planning for vessels as well as final tally, overage/shortage and damage reports, and physical counts to verify the amount of import cargo received matches the manifest, providing input in discrepancy reports for documentation
  • Provide information to various support staff on specific work orders, house checking hours, special projects, recouping and various other jobs for billing purposes, as required
  • Inspect warehouses and storage areas, ensuring storage, equipment, and office/shop areas are clean and maintained
  • Instruct personnel in the movement of cargo from transit sheds to other warehouse spaces to facilitate incoming cargo and assign locations for cargo storage
  • Operate equipment as needed
  • Conduct monthly departmental safety meetings addressing specific safety topics and document any safety issues, review policies and SOPs, and actively participate in cargo marks training with specialists and operators
  • Ensure all cargo operators are properly trained on each piece of equipment
  • Work with the Operations Chief on recruitment and manpower needs
  • Conduct regular personnel performance reviews for the Cargo team
  • All other duties as assigned by management

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • 3-5 years of experience leading cargo operations is required
  • Two years of experience safely operating industrial heavy equipment is required
  • Must be able to perform calculations pertaining to the loading of cargo
  • Requires attention to detail to supervise the loading and unloading of cargo
  • Must be able to distinguish between colors to distinguish cargo markings
  • Must follow all safety guidelines and precautions including wearing personal protective equipment
  • Overtime and holiday work are required
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet TWIC security requirements
