Container Operations Job description

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

  • Safely perform duties to lift containers onto and off of chassis or flatbeds, stack or un-stack containers in connection with over-the-road drivers.
  • The operator must also safely stack and load containers in conjunction with vessel operations.
  • Operate lift equipment to remove the container from the chassis and stack it in the proper location according to mapping instructions.
  • Enter container location data in Terminal Operating System (TOS), via onboard computer, and update as necessary.
  • On import vessels, unload containers from stevedore equipment and stack them in the designated yard area. On export vessels, load specific containers onto stevedore equipment according to stevedore directions.
  • Safely operate lift equipment to match the crane production levels when working vessels (35 – 40 containers per hour). Service trucks as jobs are populated on a computer screen.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus two years of experience operating heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to read and identify container numbers and operate large container handling equipment in a safe manner.
  • Customer service, basic computer skills, dependability, and punctuality are a must.
  • Overtime, holiday, and weekend work are required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and meet TWIC security requirements.
