Captain, Sam Houston Position Summary:

Manages the Sam Houston tour boat operation. Oversees budget, boat maintenance, pavilion maintenance, and reservation system. Ensures readiness and provides services deemed necessary as required by management. Ensures that the crew, as brand ambassadors, are consistently attentive to the public.

Key Responsibilities/Duties:

·     Steer the Sam Houston tour boat on Houston Ship Channel

·     Supervise crew members and delegate job duties to ensure the facility is being maintained

·     Assist the Senior Captain with planning, coordination and control of all aspects of shift/department operations

·     Coordinate with Sam Houston Mechanic to ensure duties in the engine room are carried out in a timely manner

·     Inspect MV Sam Houston fueling storage tank to ensure no leaks or problems are present and fill out the Environmental checklist form

·     Maintain inventory, stock supplies from storage

·     Serve as a liaison between subordinates and upper levels of management

·     Interpret policy, rules, regulations, and guidelines; ensure the accurate dissemination of information and any other communications of a departmental nature or concern

·     Conduct monthly safety meetings to discuss potential safety issues or concerns for the physical safety of personnel and equipment; observe personnel for fatigue and proper use of protective clothing and equipment

·     Update narration for a boat tour and have current stats given to the general public

·     Disseminate information and any other communications of a departmental nature or concern

·     Maintain records and reports

·     Act in accordance with Port Houston's core values (respect, excellence, accountability, diligence, and you)

Education/Experience:

·     High School diploma or GED equivalent required

·    Associate degree in Maritime Transportation or a related major in a public or accredited private academic institution preferred

·     Familiarity with Houston Ship Channel and/or Galveston Bay marine

·     US Coast Guard 500 Ton Inland license required

·     A current, valid Texas driver's license is required

·     A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment
