Aircraft Engineer Job description
The successful candidate serves as a project engineer driving commercial aircraft repair development of composite components, while also supporting component shop processes and related projects. This position works closely with DAL composite shop maintenance technicians, Delta fleet engineering, composite material vendors and processers, and OEMs (Airbus, Boeing, Collins, etc.).
The position will undertake tasks including but not limited to:
- Working with engineers to develop minor and major repair schemes for composite components (radomes, flaps, stabilizers, thrust reversers, etc.)
- Approving repair documents and substantiating data for composite repairs
- Writing technical documentation for the certification of composite repair materials
- Reviewing data and recommending and implementing changes, as required, to maintain and improve Delta's composite shop support.
- Assist and provide guidance in the development of technical analysis for aircraft component repairs and support.
- Assisting shop personnel with composite repair and process best practices
- Contributing to Delta’s long-term composite repair strategy
- Advising the direction in which Delta should move with regards to composite repair capabilities for current and future fleets
- Maintaining compliance with applicable FAA, DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations, foreign regulatory requirements and Delta's Technical Operations Policy and Procedures (TOPP), and all other engineering processes.
- Providing status for projects/issues through various briefings and documentation
- Preparing and conducting engineering working group meetings.
- Revising numerous FAA-approved Manuals and Engineering Reports.
- Collaboration and constant communication with Manufacturers and the FAA ACO and FSDO/CMO.
- Irregular shift hours may be required, on rare occasions, due to critical requirements. This may include weekend work depending on Delta’s operational requirements.
- Occasional travel is required to support various aspects of component shop support.
- This position reports to the Manager of Component Engineering and works collaboratively with other team members.
NOTE: This position is located at Minneapolis−Saint Paul International Airport
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)
Bachelors’ Degree in Engineering with 3-5+ years aviation-related experience, or Masters’ Degree in Engineering with 1-3 years aviation-related experience, or Ph.D. Degree in Engineering, or 5-9 years in a technical aviation-related discipline with 2-3 years in an aviation engineering organization with a focus on component maintenance, reliability programs, and repair design. The candidate will onboard as a Grade 7 Sr. Engineer
- The winning candidate must have a safety-first mindset.
- The previous airline, OEM, or MRO experience with commercial aircraft is strongly preferred. Familiarity with airline flight operations and support systems, 14 CFR 121 dispatch regulations, and 14 CFR 145 repair station regulations are desired.
- Must have strong customer service orientation and relationship management skills, strong project management skills; written and verbal communication skills; multi-tasking abilities; proven results orientation; and strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
- Knowledge of both Airbus and Boeing structure/components is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of aerostructures, composite, and thrust reverser repair is strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products, Solidworks, and AUTOCAD, or similar, desired
- Work is performed without appreciable direction
