Mechanical Engineer Job description

The Opportunity

We are currently looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer, to manage the performance of business-critical engineering systems through effective technical engagement ensuring a mantra of continuous improvement.

As Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will have authority for all systems within this engineering discipline and will provide technical expertise and leadership on all relevant matters. With a focus on delivering safe operations at Gatwick Airport, you will ensure that the engineering infrastructure is optimally designed, constructed and maintained.

What is the Role?

As the Principal Mechanical Engineer at Gatwick, you will:

  • Be expected to initiate and maintain extensive contacts with key engineers and officials, influencing and negotiating on critical issues.
  • Display clear leadership and collaboration on a technical and practical level with all parties, both internal and external.
  • Operate as the technical lead on GAL's Environmental Social Governance (ESG) agenda regarding Energy and Carbon reduction initiatives and supporting GAL's sustainability objectives.
  • Act as the technical lead in the design, installation, use, and decommissioning of all Mechanical engineering systems across Gatwick.
  • Operate as the responsible engineer (to administer statutory schemes such as PSSR, LOLER, PUWER, ACOP L8), at a strategic level, for any activities regarding Mechanical Engineering and permits to work.
  • The Principal Engineer will also author and administer all technical standards and standard operating procedures which fall under their subject knowledge.

The mechanical engineering systems will include but are not limited to the following infrastructure across all buildings at the airport:

  • Heating, Ventilation and Cooling systems include Natural Gas and compressed air.
  • Public Health services include all potable, domestic, and sprinkler/hose reel water systems as well as above and below-ground drainage.
  • Building Management Systems
  • Passenger Sensitive Equipment (PSE) includes Lifts, Escalators, and Passenger Conveyors (LEPC) as well as the inter-terminal transit system and suspended access equipment.

Do you have what we're looking for?

  • Chartered member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) or the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) with experience in the design of simple self-contained building services and centralized heating and cooling networks for major infrastructure
  • Able to understand and work with technical professionals, design consultants, regulating bodies, and on-site contractors as appropriate.
  • Experience in the successful participation, planning and implementation of major capital projects.
  • Knowledge of thermal modeling, BREEAM and fluid dynamics would be advantageous to this role.
  • Understanding how to support Gatwick to achieve its sustainability targets for energy, water and carbon
  • The individual must be able to understand and work with equipment manufacturers to influence and develop the standards for PSE.
  • Management and leadership skills.
  • Customer-focused approach with strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills

Do you have the following?

  • A Mechanical Engineering degree (BEng or MEng) qualification
  • Chartered member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) or the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) with experience in the design of simple self-contained building services and centralized heating and cooling networks for major infrastructure
