Maintenance Technician Job description

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) is currently accepting bids for the position of Motor Equipment Repairperson (Bargaining Unit, Local Union No. 25) in the Aviation department. The Motor Equipment Repairperson performs routine preventive maintenance and inspects and repairs gasoline, diesel, automotive, construction, and fire equipment at Logan International Airport.

Essential Tasks of the Job

Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on motor equipment at Logan, as needed.

1. Inspects and assess jobs.

2. Coordinates with the shop foreman to set up maintenance schedules of equipment.

3. Repairs gasoline, diesel, automotive, construction, fire equipment, and specialized   

 Aviation snow removal equipment.

Maintains records of preventive maintenance and repairs of equipment.

1. Orders supplies from the shop foreman for maintenance and repairs, when necessary.

2. Maintains records of repair costs and parts.

3. Keeps maintenance records of all tools and equipment.

Operates motor tools and equipment including power hand tools.

Responds to emergency situations according to airport procedures and airport emergency codes, and acts as an escort, as directed.

SECONDARY JOB TASKS:

Cleans maintains, and re-arranges shop as requested.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

EDUCATION LEVEL: Ability to read and demonstrate basic oral, written mathematical and manual skills. Ability to communicate in standard English.

EXPERIENCE IN RELATED FIELD:  3 - 5 years experience in maintenance and repair of gas and diesel equipment such as automobiles and heavy equipment required. Experience with specialized Aviation snow removal equipment preferred.

UNIQUE EXPERTISE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATIONS: 

1. Current and valid CDL B driver's license unrestricted except for corrective lenses required.

2. Must possess or obtain within one (1) year a current and valid Department of Public Safety Hoisting License Classification 3A.

3. Ability to obtain additional Department of Public Safety Hoisting licenses as needed.

4. Knowledge of automobiles, heavy equipment, and hydraulic and electrical systems.

5. Knowledge of the operation of motor equipment and power tools.

6 Ability to pass Massport security check and obtain a Massport Security Badge.

7. Ability to pass airfield driving test and obtain Aerodrome Ramp, Apron, and Airfield License.

8. Ability to communicate clearly on a two-way radio.

9. Ability to pass Massport controlled substance testing and background check.

10. Willingness to take part in random drug testing.

11. Ability to attend a course in Heavy Diesel Equipment Repair from a certified trade school.

12. Ability to operate standard shift vehicle.

Supplemental Information

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Environmental Parameters:  Ability to work in an airport environment with conditions that may include; fumes, odors, gases, chemicals, and dust as well as decibels in the range of 65 -100. Ability to work on the airfield and parking areas in all weather conditions (hot, cold, humid, dry, and wet). Ability to work with grass and weeds. Ability to work in conditions in which there is a danger to life, health, or bodily injuries, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical shock; on scaffolding and high places; with exposure to all types of explosives and exposure to toxic chemical and biological agents; and in all Massport vehicles, water vehicles, and all airport-related structures.

Physical Demands: 

Strength: Ability to lift/move items weighing up to 50 lbs.

Type: Ability to be on one's feet 8 hours per day, to walk at least three hours a day and distances of two miles. Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, reach, handle, finger, and/or feel. Ability to demonstrate: good hearing to monitor radio equipment on the airfield and streets, and clarity of vision beyond 20 feet to see distances being traveled by equipment being operated, and approaching aircraft. Ability to discriminate colors for airfield lights.

WORK SCHEDULE:  Ability to work a 40-hour work week and able to work on any work shift assigned. Ability to work overtime as assigned. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and in emergency conditions as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED: 2-way radio, power tools, automotive engine analyzer and diagnostic equipment, architectural drawings and specifications, blueprints, charts, Massport vehicle, ladders, hand tools, shovel, and other Massport equipment.
