Delta Air Lines is recognized for operational excellence and industry leading on-time performance. We seek an Analytics Leader who will play a key role in forecasting, optimizing and evaluating Delta's scheduled flight (i.e. Block) times. The Block Team’s output serves as a critical input to achieving Delta’s on-time and financial goals; Goals our customers and shareholders expect. 

The candidate is accountable for two overarching objectives.

• Near term objectives encompass the end-to-end ownership of Block Plans. These include…

   o Forecasting & optimizing initial Block Times

   o Maintaining a pulse on behaviors in Air Traffic Control, airport construction, routings, etc. that drive variance from initial forecast 

   o Completing a post-month analysis on the accuracy of the initial  forecast

• Long term objectives are designed to improve the team’s overall process. These include… 

   o Enhancing Delta’s Block Time forecaster through front/back-end initiatives

   o Modernizing the data pipeline and dashboards that the team utilizes

This is a highly visible position as numerous departments at Delta have a vested interest in Block. The candidate will partner with various teams (e.g. Air Traffic Management, Operations Analytics & Performance, Network/Schedule Planning, etc.) and present findings across the corporate spectrum; from Individual Contributors to Vice Presidents. Success will be contingent on these partnerships and balancing near term deliverables with the long term.  

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES (not limited to):

• Take ownership of all things Block for a market scope

   o Monthly forecasting, optimizing & auditing future periods’ scheduled Block

   o Monthly Performance Review (i.e. Post-Analysis) of scheduled Block accuracy

        • Highlight drivers of forecast error and action where appropriate

   o Liaison with Air Traffic Management & OCC Operations Planning to proactively understand changes to Block and adjust the forecast accordingly

   o Provide data insights to ad hoc, Block performance inquiries

   o Present relevant Block issues to audiences who can influence resolution

• Collaborate with I.T. to build Delta’s Block Time Forecaster web application

   o Supply front-end/back-end requirements and validate those solutions

• Vet new Block forecasting techniques that improve accuracy & reduce learning lag

• Advance the team’s shift from older data pipelines to more cost-effective paradigms

• Deliver results given basic guidance

• Prioritize workload to meet hard deadlines

• Promote a collegial environment to leverage the intellectual collective of the team

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)

• Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline or other quantitative degree

• +3 years in Descriptive/Predictive/Prescriptive Analytics role or relevant quantitative field 

• Advanced knowledge of…

   o Data querying (e.g. SQL)

   o A programming language (e.g. Python, R, SAS)

   o Data pipelines

   o Data visualization (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, Excel)

• Strong written, verbal communication and presentation (e.g. PowerPoint) skills 

   o Ability to take complex ideas and make them accessible to a non-technical person

   o Build a story, via data, with supporting evidence & actionable take-aways

   o Comfortable presenting to all levels, Individual Contributor to Vice President

• Prior experience project managing a deliverable from Requirements to Implementation

   o Working with I.T. partners to stay on schedule and in-scope

   o Set expectations on solution capabilities, timelines, prioritization

• Showcase innate curiosity, active listening, being a self-starter & First Principle thinking

• Deadline driven with a talent to produce thoughtful analysis in acute time frames

• Champion Occam’s Razor principles (i.e. simplicity) that aides in fast iterations & interpretability

• Espouse Delta's values of honesty, integrity, and respect while maintaining a positive attitude

WHAT WILL GIVE YOU A COMPETITIVE EDGE (PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS)

• Master’s degree in a STEM discipline or other quantitative degree

• +5 years in Descriptive/Predictive/Prescriptive Analytics role or relevant quantitative field

• Experience with…

   o Open-source, time series forecasting packages (e.g. Prophet, Greykite, etc.)

   o Linear/Dynamic Programs solving optimization problems

   o Python data transformations 

   o AWS data pipeline (e.g. SageMaker, Lambda/Glue, Postgres)

   o Power BI dashboard publication

   o Project Management in an AGILE environment
